STEFANIE + JOSH || A summer wedding in Fredericksburg, Virginia celebrated on Kent Island, Maryland

Ohhhhh, hello dreamy early summer weather and magical riverside love story and big ol’ feelings and the best goofy faces possible!

Stefanie and Josh literally and figuratively bridged their lives together by marrying in Fredericksburg (where Stef’s family lives) and celebrating on Kent Island (where Josh’s family hails from). Despite a little hiccup in traffic shuffling from one state to next, it was a truly glorious day.

Stefanie’s sister Melissa was kind enough to lend not only her beautiful home for the bride squad to get ready in, but also her insanely amazing makeup skills to the whole group of ladies. Airbrush magic for seven? Yes, please!

Meanwhile, just across town, Josh and the boys were getting primped and strategically planning their aisle sweep formation.

As wedding days are wont to do, it went from a sleepy-excited morning and suddenly, it was time to hit the altar. There was no shortage of giggles and tears, and I am oh-so-serious about Stef having the best faces e.v.e.r.

After getting big feelings and wrapping themselves in all the congratulations from their guests, we hit the Rappahannock River, which was literally just across the street from the church. And! Story time: S+J had their first date kayaking down this river, and basiiiiically almost died flipping in the rapids. So, you know, this is obviously the very best choice of a backdrop to do their wedding portraits at.

Honestly, midday sun is normally a nightmare to work under, but the cool green canopy of the trees beside this river was just the dreamiest! We sent the wedding party off and had some quiet moments to revel in the post-ceremony goodness.

And…oh yeah, you got it - more of me cracking up behind the camera at Stefanie. I LIVE for embracing the goof, especially on such an emotionally volatile sort of day. Let it all out!

After we wrapped portraits, it was time to make the hike back to Kent Island. Shockingly (?!), there aren’t any photos of the gnarly traffic we hit on the drive east, but we were fortunate enough to get to the island with plenty of daylight and beautiful skies! And beer! AND TAAAACOOOSS!

Everyone ate, drank, and made themselves quite merry as the sun began setting. I can’t think of a more perfect backdrop for a first dance, but I’m a pretty big sucker for the sunsets on Kent Island.

And then the lights went low, and it was time to paaaaarty. The dancefloor was packed, and the sky would not stop delivering jawdropping colors.

ALYSSA + CHRIS || Kent Island, Maryland - An Eastern Shore Summer Wedding

Alyssa and Chris are two seriously cool cucumbers, and I think with their wedding being on their 9th anniversary (how cool is that?!) they were just so ready, so stoked to get married that they were extra on top of being in the moment and enjoying their wedding. And seriously, there was a lot to enjoy!

Seriously, first looks with bridesmaids are almost as good as first looks with future partners, or at the end of an aisle. All. The. Feelings!

A million ‘not sorries!’ that there’s a million photos shot on/around/through Alyssa veil. I lovelovelove that gauzy texture, and I’m also pretty partial to the hilarity that happened when it just…fell out when she and Chris were giddily cruising back down the aisle after being named Man + Wife.

For being an almost cloudless day, these photos came out so magical - generally the middle of any summer day sends me fleeing to the shade, but we totally worked the strong light, and got some truly breathtaking portraits along the water.

And all the props possible to the guests + wedding party here - they absolutely flooded the dance floor, putting all those folks who wait until the lights are dimmed to boogie down.

Congratulations to A+C - loved being a part of this breezy, beautiful day! -MEJ

ANDREA + ADAM || CONQUEST BEACH, MARYLAND

You know, I’m a big fan of making lists. And after writing and rewriting what I wanted to say about Andrea and Adam’s once in a lifetime day, I’ve found that a list is exactly the way to talk about this momentous occasion. So, without further ado, Mary Ella’s Curated Pros and Cons List of Getting Married In Hurricane Weather…

1img-063-7583.jpg

PROS:
-Grey skies make for gorgeous skin tones in portraits, crazy color pops, incredibly dreamy black and white images.

1img-045-7488.jpg
1img-026-7469.jpg

-Literally weathering a storm is symbolic of other less tangible upheavals in life, especially when it’s done with the help of those nearest and dearest.

-A good downpour makes you realize how truly futile the whole attempt at perfectly planning a day down to the second really is, and how delicious it is to give in to a little bit of chaos.

-Raindrops can mostly disguise happy tears. ….mostly ;)

1img-086-8183.jpg

-Umbrellas are perfectly useful, perfectly pretty photo props.

-Extra time is automatically added in to the day for ‘drying off’ (aka a perfect excuse to dizzily, happily smooch your new spouse)

1img-127-7769.jpg

-Free slip and slide! (No groomsmen were seriously injured, at least not on camera!)

1img-128-7770.jpg

-Puddle splashing is free and easy entertainment for littles in attendance.

1img-139-8618.jpg

-Brides with boho beachy theme boards literally pay looooooots of money for hair that curls this artistically after a drench + dry.

1img-175-8206.jpg

-Okay, we’re gonna circle back on that amazingly dramatic light point because SERIOUSLY.

-Any break in the weather is considered a sacred space, and is immediately taken full advantage of.

-Your photographer is gonna get a little weird and experimental with things.

1img-198-9020.jpg

CONS:
-Things May Get Wet
-Okay Seriously, No That’s It.

I truly cannot be more thankful for Andrea and Adam’s incredible outlook on a day that I know would inspire serious meltdowns. Their ability to keep focus on what really mattered made for amazing photographs, but even more importantly, for an amazingly memorable day for everyone involved. I’ve had a few weddings that’ve happened with inclement weather that I always show to clients that’re nervous about their rain-plan, but this is the new benchmark. Congratulations to these two for seriously dancing in the rain! -MEJ
